The Netherlands Makes History

The 2025 European Pickleball Championships in Rome turned out to be a historic tournament for the Netherlands. At the iconic Foro Italico, the Dutch team captured two gold medals and one bronze medal — their best performance ever at a European Championship.

Gold for Roos van Reek in Singles

In the Women’s Singles (Open), Roos van Reek was crowned European Champion. In the final against Italy’s Francesca Rumi, she kept her composure and won convincingly: 12-10, 11-3. This marked a historic moment as the first-ever singles title for the Netherlands at a European Championship.

Bronze for Aranka Huijberts in the 50+ Category

In the Senior Women’s 50+ category, Aranka Huijberts claimed bronze. She secured her medal by defeating Luxembourg’s Michelle Schweitzer with 11-7, 11-8. Her podium finish highlights the growing strength of Dutch pickleball, also among the more experienced players.

Gold in Mixed Doubles after a Miraculous Comeback

The highlight of the tournament was the Mixed Doubles victory by Roos van Reek and Pieter de Vries. After a dominant first set, which they won 11-2, things looked bleak in the second. The Dutch duo trailed 10-1 against their Spanish opponents and seemed destined for a deciding third set.

But Van Reek and De Vries never gave up. Point by point they clawed their way back into the game. At 10-10 the tension was unbearable, yet the Dutch pair kept their nerves under control and sealed the set 13-11. With this remarkable comeback, they captured gold without the need for a third set — marking the first-ever Dutch gold medal in Mixed Doubles at a European Championship.

A Strong Overall Showing for TeamNL

Across the board, the Netherlands performed strongly. Several doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by tough opponents from Bulgaria and Sweden. The final tally of three medals — including two gold — marks a milestone for Dutch pickleball on the international stage.

The Largest European Championship Yet

The 2025 Championships in Rome were the largest to date, featuring 30 participating countries. The event confirmed pickleball’s rapid growth in Europe, with the Netherlands now firmly established among the continent’s elite.
